The word "loafer" is associated by popular rumor with the name of the famous Moscow doctor Christian Ivanovich Loder. Loder was a supporter of the popular treatment with mineral waters at that time, and in 1828 he opened an "Institution of artificial mineral waters" on Ostozhenka, in Khitrovy Lane. The Moscow ladies rejoiced: now you don't have to spend money on a trip to Baden-Baden, got into a carriage, drove through several streets, and here you have water, and a famous doctor, and refined society. The establishment was located in a large, beautiful house, which had an extensive park that descended to the Moskva River. In addition to drinking water, the procedures included mineral baths and a three-hour walk along the paths of the park, where an orchestra always played in one of the gazebos. Among the patients of the Moscow resort, rich people who came in their own carriages prevailed, and the coachmen had to wait for their masters for several hours, watching with surprise as they, seemingly without any purpose or meaning, wandered back and forth, then ran around the park. To the questions of surprised passers-by, what are the gentlemen doing so busy, they answered: "They're chasing a bum." So the sharp word "slacker" spread first in Moscow, and then all over the world, and the expression "chasing a slacker" still means aimless occupation, idleness.
